Poker Games

Ever heard of the term “Mississippi riverboats”? These were the mobile casinos, steam-powered riverboats, to be exact. They used to travel all over the America slowly and offer all types of casino games to gamblers across the country. Poker was born in these boats – we don’t know the exact date and the real “inventor”, but we know that it was already a popular game in the year 1829. It was a slightly different version though, the game was played with a deck of 20 cards and players were betting against their opponent’s hand, not on theirs.

Slowly, the game developed. New rules, cards and poker hands have been added to the game, like the joker, flush, the full 52 card decks… But the real popularity of the poker games began in 1970. This was the year of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) started, also the year of poker legends like Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim, Doyle Brunson, Bobby Baldwin and Puggy Pearson arose. These guys were the superstars during that era and every family in America was following their success. Almost all of them wrote best-seller books about poker strategies, like Super System, The Theory of Poker and Book of Poker. Between the years 1980 – 1990, poker expanded to almost all of the casinos in America and turned into a symbol of popular culture.

It is still like that – even more, thanks to the popularity of online poker and video poker games. You can play poker on almost any device and anytime you want nowadays, and thanks to the tournaments such as World Poker Tour and European Poker Tour, it is considered as a “mind sport”, not only a gambling card game (the same as online blackjack).

Poker Game Rules

There are many variations of poker games around, so the answer to how to play poker question differs according to the variation. The top four variations are straight poker, stud poker, draw poker and Texas Holdem poker. Straight poker is the oldest one, using 5 card poker hands and a card hierarchy, such as flush, four of a kind, two of a kind etc. In stud poker, there are face-down and face-up cards, this is considered as the street version of poker. Draw poker consists of completely face-down cards and players are allowed to bet in each round. Lastly, Texas Holdem (the most popular version in casinos) requires two face-down and three face-up cards, the goal is completing a full 5 card hand. You can refer to our “how to play poker” section to see the detailed rules for each variation.

The knowledge of the hierarchy of the cards is important for each variation, so here they are from top to bottom:
